We Remember Joan Echausse - A Month's Mind Memorial Mass - 6/8

From Father Tony:

The passing of our Parish Outreach director, Joan Echausse, has been a loss that has been experienced at so many levels in our parish life. As a professional, the unique style with which she motivated all of us to be deeply engaged in the many programs and initiatives of the outreach ministry cannot be duplicated. As a long-time friend to so many in this parish, her absence will leave a hole for a long time. As a woman of vision and persistence, she is a person whom no one could ignore or simply walk away from. In a word, she is irreplaceable.

Since perhaps many might not have been able to attend Joan’s funeral on May 9th, I would like to invite you to a “month’s mind” Memorial Mass on Saturday, June 8th at 10am in the Church. I want to thank the many people who made generous contributions to Parish Outreach in Joan’s memory. It is so clear that the will of many people is that the work of outreach continue and flourish in Joan’s name. What better tribute could we offer than that?

Finally, I want to offer my special thanks to Ximena Aravena, Lupé Ramirez, Barbara Powell and Yanira Chacon for the many ways they have labored hard to keep all of the programs of Parish Outreach moving forward. Through the intercession of our beloved Joan, may our Lord pour forth his blessings upon us all.

Originally on our website when Joan passed:

It is with sadness that we mourn the passing of Joan Echausse, St. Brigid's Director of Parish Outreach.
And it is with hope-filled joy that we celebrate Joan being embraced and enveloped in the full presence of our Loving God.

As many parishioners know, Joan was a key figure at St. Brigid's Church for many, many years.  A long time parishioner, Joan and her husband Paul, raised a large family here in Westbury.  She ministered as Director of our Parish Outreach at St. Brigid.

When one thinks of Joan, so many descriptive words come to mind:  Loving spouse, mother, grandmother, sibling, friend, co-worker.  Faith-filled, active, dynamic Catholic.  Passionate, determined, zealous, soul-filled advocate for those in need.  Educator, educated, gifted and talented.  The list goes on.

After having been a Catholic School Teacher for years, Joan connected with Parish Outreach at St. Brigid's first as a volunteer.  Later, in 2002, she graciously and wonderfully accepted the position of Director of Parish Outreach.  In that ministry, Joan oversaw the many facets of St. Brigid's service to those who many in our society reject, abandon, or disregard.

Joan ministered with the love of Jesus in the forefront of all her work.  She consistently advocated for people's needs and raised many funds to accomplish her many goals.  Her passion for the poor was always evident.  Joan's ministry was an authentic and extensive manifestation of active discipleship.

Certainly, Father Tony and the parish staff will miss Joan.  Her spirit will certainly live on in the parish's continued support, advocacy and love of those so close to Joan's heart - the poor among us.

May Joan's soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace.  Amen.

“His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master." (Matthew 25:23)
